Bill Powell’s name will forever be synonymous with San Jacinto High School football.
The school’s one-time Tiger Football Field is now named for him.
Powell was honored during a halftime ceremony Friday, Sept. 20, at the renamed Coach Bill Powell Field.
Powell, who retired after 29 years in the San Jacinto Unified School District, is “one of the winningest coaches in Riverside County,” a district news release states.
He coached San Jacinto High’s Tigers from 1998 to 2014, leading teams to four league championships and two CIF championship games.
“No other SJHS head coach had the longevity nor the win-loss record of Coach Powell and his staff, with 126 wins, 68 losses and two ties,” the release states.
During the ceremony, family, friends, school employees, former players and coaches gathered with Powell to celebrate, the release states. Ex-Tigers players gave him a set of golf clubs. He also received a commemorative helmet, signed by players and colleagues, and a plaque.
Powell also was a teacher, coach and assistant principal in the district.
In June, the San Jacinto school board approved the renaming of the stadium after Powell.
