A Jurupa Valley man was arrested on Saturday, Dec. 30 following the fatal shooting of his brother in Lytle Creek, authorities said.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement Monday, Jan. 1, that authorities learned of the shooting on Saturday at around 4:30 p.m. when Fontana Police Department officers and deputies from the Sheriff’s Fontana Station responded to Dignity Health Urgent Care, on Sierra Lakes Parkway in Fontana.

Authorities found Tyler Monfort, a 20-year-old man from Jurupa Valley, seated inside a parked vehicle and dead from a gunshot wound.

Deputies learned Tyler, his brother Christian Monfort, a 21-year-old man from Jurupa Valley, and a friend drove to an off-road trail in Lytle Creek, a mountain area west of the Cajon Pass, where they sat in the vehicle.

Christian had a gun in his possession and fired it, striking Tyler in the process, the sheriff’s statement said. The friend drove to the urgent care in Fontana to get medical aid for Tyler.

After arriving to the urgent care, Christian fled on foot and was arrested after threatening an employee of a nearby business with the gun, the sheriff’s statement said.

Christian Monfort was booked in the West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of murder.

The Sheriff’s Department did not provide further information on the circumstances of the fatal shooting or whether investigators had learned of a motive.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to contact Detective Michael Roth, Specialized Investigations Division at (909) 890-4904.
